Giving blood during the holidays

It’s a busy time for all this holiday season, but it’s still an important time to give blood.

According to The Blood Center, an increase in elective surgeries and traffic related accidents in the winter bring about a need for blood while donations typically decrease in the same time span.

Shoppers and residents on the Coast will have a chance to donate this weekend as The Blood Center brings a holiday blood drive to the Edgewater Mall on Friday and Saturday from 12 to 6 p.m.

All blood types are accepted and they’ll even wrap your presents and give you a t-shirt for donating. Gina Necaise with The Blood Center said, “Blood can’t be manufactured. We rely on volunteer blood donors and we need to collect about 300 to 350 units a day to supply our hospitals. It’s very, very important. It’s an ongoing thing. There are always patients in need.”

People must be 17 or older to donate, but 16-year-olds can as well with parental consent. For more information about donating, visit
