The Gulfport Police Department is beefing up patrols to help cut down on drunk or buzzed driving.
Starting today through the New Year as a part of a new safety campaign called ‘Buzzed Driving is Drunk Driving’, DUI trained officers will be patrolling the streets.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, every day almost 30 people in the United States die in drunk-driving accidents. That’s one person every 48 minutes.
Gulfport Police Detective Jason Ducré says these types of accidents can easily be avoided. “In the state of Mississippi there were ten traffic related deaths during the Thanksgiving holidays. That’s ten families that will be hurting during Christmas. Be responsible. Make sure you have a ride. Buzzed driving is drunk driving. Don’t be impaired.”
Driving under the influence of narcotics will also be included in DUI stops.
