As temperatures drop, local firefighters want to raise awareness for typical winter time fire hazards including space heaters.
Here are a few tips that could save your life as we head into winter.
If you use portable heaters turn them off when you leave the room and also when you go to bed.
Don’t use your oven to warm up the house and be sure to get a chimney sweep if you have a fire place.
Also, check to see if your fire place has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room and causing a fire.
Keep decorations at least three feet from fire places, stoves, and anything that generates heat.
If the worst should happen, be ready and have a plan in place in case of emergency. Biloxi Battalion Anthony Trosclair said, “Have a family fire emergency plan. Everyone should have a plan, one meeting spot outside of the house to make sure everybody gets out safe and everyone’s accounted for.”
The winter season officially starts December 21st, but these are good tips as we head into winter.
