New way to recycle on the beach

The Harrison County Beautification Commission, the Harrison County Board of Supervisors, Mississippi Aquarium, and Gulfport High School came up with a new and interactive way to keep our beaches clean on the Coast.

They came together to build a mobile recycling turtle that is used as a plastic receptacle for residents and tourists. This project has been in the works for nine years.

Roy Anderson Corp contractors provided the tools and the rest is history.

Students at Gulfport High were excited about making a difference in the community. Gulfport High senior Cobi Pepperman said, “I think it is great we get to make something that is going to be affecting the community as well. Not only does it benefit us by giving us something to do and learn more, it also benefits the community by adding a beautiful structure to the beach.”

Now the turtle doesn’t have a name yet, but no worries. Schools on the Coast will have the opportunity to name the green recycling machine very soon.
