Home field advantage is a lie between St. Stanislaus and Poplarville, where the home team has only won twice since Poplarville became a 4A school in 2005.
Now the year is 2019 and those two rivals are slated to square off yet again at Poplarville in tomorrow’s first round playoff match-up.
During that span, the road team is 9-2, having won the last seven in a row. Perhaps even more bizarre, Poplarville is winless against SSC at the Hornet’s Nest.
But no matter, the reigning 4A South State champions are playing their best football at the best time, winning four out of five in district after losing four out of five in non-district.
Needless to say, the Hornets know how to flip a switch when the second season rolls around. Poplarville Middle Linebacker Zac Owen said, “Non-district, there’s a certain attitude. District, there’s a certain attitude. And once you get to the playoffs, it all comes together. You’ve got to have your best attitude about everything when it comes here because it’s win or go home.”
Poplarville Head Coach Jay Beech said, “This year, we’re just trying to find our way. We’re just trying to come play our best football. Last year seems like a long time ago at this point, and we’re trying to make a name for ourselves this year still.”
A win for Poplarville would help the Hornets avoid their first losing season since 2012. Friday’s kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
