As we cross into the back half of the high school football district schedule, the good teams and the bad teams are starting to separate themselves.
As a result of Gulfport and D’Iberville’s combined dominance up to the point there won’t be any separation atop region 4 class 6A until the conclusion of Friday’s head-to-head match-up.
For the second year in a row, the Admirals and Warriors are doing battle in the fifth week of league play with first place in the division up for grabs.
Both teams are coming in with a district record of 4-0, but only one of them can take perfection into the weekend.
That being said, the ‘News 25 Game of the Week’ might just turn out to be the game of the year on the Gulf Coast, at least in terms of playoff implications and the home side Warriors wouldn’t have it any other way. D’Iberville Right Tackle Robert Cook said, “We’re fighting for first place and it’s a big game, but we’re going to handle it like every other game. It’s strictly business every week. Our coaches teach us right, and we do what they teach us.”
D’Iberville Head Football Coach Larry Dolan said, “That’s what you want to be in this time of year. You don’t want to be where it doesn’t matter. We’ve put ourselves in a position where our games matter in this one and the next two after, they matter. And we just know we’re living in the moment right now and the history is the history and we want to make some history. And we want to play well and they’re a great football team. This game does not make or break our season, but it definitely is a big one because it’s the next one.”
D’Iberville and Gulfport will kick things off from Warrior Stadium at 7 p.m. Friday.
