On October 21st, 2016, three years ago yesterday, the Gulfport football team lost to D’Iberville 20-17. As it turns out, that was Gulfport’s last loss in region 4 class 6A.
Twenty district wins later, the Admirals and Warriors are bringing it full circle in the ‘News 25 Game of the Week.’
Both teams are off to a 4-0 start in league play, leaving Friday’s head-to-head match-up as a guaranteed loss for one of these two teams. Also a guaranteed win for the other side, which could very well decide the region title a couple weeks early.
Considering these two schools have combined to win the last four of those, Gulfport Head Coach John Archie and senior Quarterback Cade Crosby are on high alert, leading up to game day. Coach Archie said, “D’Iberville, that’s a very talented football team. They’ve got Jaden Walley, a quarterback, and his brother also. They’re very talented, well coached. We’ve just got to go out and play our best football we’ve played and we’re trying to play championship football.”
Crosby said, “I mean it’s a big game. It’s for the region play for us, I mean either team to get in first. So I mean both of the teams are going to treat it like region, final game of the year. But we’re just going to go into it like any other game, just prepare really good and try to take the W and take the region this week.”
The Admirals and Warriors will kick things off from D’Iberville at 7 p.m. Friday.
