On the home side of the ‘News 25 Game of the Week,’ Harrison Central has a lot riding on Friday’s cross-town rivalry against Gulfport to the point where bragging rights might actually come second.
Even if they do come first, it’s because a win over the visiting Admirals would also go long way in terms of helping the Red Rebels make it back to back trips to the class 6A playoffs.
Following two straight road losses, Harrison Central is currently on the outside looking in with a district record of 1-2.
But it’s not like the Red Rebels haven’t beaten the Admirals before as one of the last two teams to do it in 2016, prior to Gulfport’s current 19 game winning streak in league play.
Here’s Head Coach Casey Cain and senior Free Safety Chris Davis on a game that doesn’t need much introduction. Coach Cain said, “Both of us have a Gulfport, Mississippi address. And we all live in Harrison County. And the kids have been growing up playing against each other since they were five years old in little league. So that’s the excitement for the kids.”
Davis said, “For years now, Gulfport has always been somebody we’ve always taken as a big game and always wanted to beat. So we’re going into the game head on focused, and Gulfport is a very good team. They’re like one of the best teams in our district, and so if we can beat them that means we’ve got a good shot of still getting into the playoffs.”
In addition to that 19 game winning streak, the Red Rebels will also be looking to end Gulfport’s ten game road winning streak. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Friday from Harrison Central.
