Sometimes the ‘News 25 Game of the Week’ is simply a product of overall success or district record. Other times, it is a rivalry game that simply can’t be ignored as is the case this week between Gulfport and Harrison Central.
Albeit cliché, both teams are gonna be throwing those records out the window leading up to Friday’s region 4 class 6A showdown. But since we’re on the topic, the visiting Admirals are 5-2 overall with a district mark of 3-0.
Meanwhile, the Red Rebels are 3-4 overall with a record of just 1-2 in league play.
That makes Gulfport the heavy favorite to extend its 19 game winning streak against region 4 opponents, but rest assured Harrison Central hasn’t forgotten last year’s 42-21 thumping.
For Gulfport Head Coach John Archie and senior Wide Receiver Tommie Johnson, this week is all about finding that balance between one game at a time and circling October 18th on the calendar. Coach Archie said, “We try to treat rivalry week just like any other week, but it’s kind of hard because our kids are going to get up to play this game. It’s a big game, it’s a rivalry game. We’re still trying to be 1-0 at the end of the week. Records kind of don’t matter this week. Our kids are going to come out, I’m pretty sure their kids are going to get up and play their hardest and ours are going to give their best effort too.”
Johnson said, “The Harrison Central game is probably just the most lit game, probably the most focused we could be for the entire week of practice because it’s such a big thing to us. So we don’t get too far ahead of ourselves, we just stay focused.”
The Admirals and Red Rebels will kick things off from Harrison Central at 7 p.m. on Friday. News 25 will have plenty of highlights on the ‘News 25 Friday Night Showcase.’
