Emotions were high at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport today at their fourth annual ‘Bells across America’ ceremony.
‘Bells across America’ is a day and a ceremony to remember those who died in the line of duty and their family members, known as ‘Gold Star Families.’
As the names of 80 service members were read, a bell rang and a moment of silence was given in their honor. Long Beach Mayor George Bass and Pass Christian Mayor Chipper McDermott read some of these names to show community support.
Families of those who have fallen feel the support from the Navy in these types of ceremonies and throughout the ‘Gold Star’ program. ‘Gold Star’ Mother Margaret Levens said, “I enjoy coming here to have all of these service members honored. It feels great to know that none of them are forgotten, that their name is called out and that one silent moment is there for each family member.”
There was also over 170 flags placed outside of the hall where the ceremony was held to honor all those who lost their lives this year in active duty across all services.
