They call it ‘the place apart,’ but this coastal city is anything but ‘out of the loop’ when it comes to development.
Bay St. Louis Mayor Mike Favre stopped by our studio this morning to give us an update on what’s happening in the city, including an expansion to the harbor.
Currently with about 165 boat slips, the addition of pier 5 will bring 45 new spaces to help meet the growing demand in the area. Mayor Favre says they’re getting calls every day to get on the waiting list for a spot.
Also on the horizon is ‘The Pearl’ which is a new upscale, boutique-style hotel on the corner of Main Street and Beach Boulevard. It is already under construction as well as a new theatre.
Mayor Favre says these multi-million dollar projects should bring a great economic boost to the city. “Everybody along the coast took a hit with the spillway opening and all. We still have the water problems. It’s a major hit on the fishing industry. Those guys make a hard enough living as it is, and now this hit hits them and knocks them back. But tourism is our big thing. We live and die with tourism in the Bay. It’s one of those things that we’ve got to continue to improve and continue to find ways to get people in there. Now with the hotel and all coming it’ll get them in there, and they’ll be able to stay in Bay St. Louis instead of going out of town.”
Construction on the harbor expansion is expected to begin November 1st. Mayor Favre says the hotel, theatre, and the harbor should all be complete by late spring, early summer next year.
