Officers injured during I-10 wreck identified


On September 11, 2019, at approximately 08:42 a.m., Gulfport Police Officers were working a single-vehicle crash near the 35/36 mile-marker westbound Interstate 10 when a vehicle struck a parked Gulfport Police Department motorcycle.

The motorcycle and debris struck a total of 3 three officers, causing serious injuries to 2 officers. One officer was treated and released on scene. The additional officers were transported by AMR to an area hospital, one officer was later released and the other officer was transported to an out of state hospital for further medical treatment in stable condition.

The officers injured in the crash are Officer Brian Woods, Officer Benjamin Ford, and Officer Joshua Spengler.

Officer Woods and Officer Ford are currently assigned to the Operations Division and work on Patrol serving the men and women of Orange Grove within the City of Gulfport. Officer Woods has served for over nine years with the Gulfport Police Department. Officer Ford recently graduated from the Police Academy and Field Training Officer Program and has less than one year of service. Officer Spengler is currently assigned to the Traffic Division as a Motor Officer. Officer Spengler has been with the Gulfport Police Department for 5 years.
