With the 2020 Census Day soon approaching, it is helpful to understand why this nationwide activity is so important.
That’s why the Biloxi Cultural and Historical Society hosted an informative meeting about the United States Census tonight.
Many people are nervous when it comes to filling out the Census because they are afraid of where their information might end up. An official with the U.S. Census Bureau spoke at the meeting tonight and said that is not something you need to worry about. All responses to the 2020 Census are safe, secure, and protected by federal law.
Your answers can only be used to produce statistics and they cannot be used against you in any way. History and Genealogy Librarian Jane Shambra said, “We need to encourage them to do it, pester them if we need to. It is all confidential and it is so important everything gets counted, whether it is for schools, for roadways, or whatever kind of funding, and tell them no one is going to come after them if they’ve made a mistake, but they definitely need to do it.”
Census data determines how more than $675 billion are spent, supporting your state, county, and community’s vital programs. In 2020 you will be able to respond to the census online instead of through mail.
