Ole Miss looking in the mirror coming off week one loss

Prior to Saturday, the Ole Miss football program had never lost a game in the month of August.

The Rebels also hadn’t done much losing to Memphis, but that all changed in week one against their most frequently played out-of-conference rival.

The Rebels won’t be able to move forward without taking a step back to reflect on what went right and what went wrong in that 15-10 defeat to the Tigers.

The good news has everything to do with their Landshark defense that gave up just 13 of those points and 364 total yards.

The only points Memphis put on the board in the second half came via a safety, but the Ole Miss offense still couldn’t prevail.

That’s the part Head Coach Matt Luke is losing sleep over. “Just like every year, I think you make your biggest improvement from week one to week two. And especially with a young team like we’ve got, that’ll be very important. And I think defensively there’s a lot of stuff to build on, there’s obviously things that we can get corrected. Offensively, obviously not what we expected. I think we’ve got the right pieces in place. We’ve got some young guys and we’re going to get them better. I just think we can get better on that side of the ball in a hurry.”

The Rebels will look to create some separation against Arkansas in week two with the last four of those decisions coming by a combined 10 points. That SEC West opener will kick off at 6:30 p.m. Saturday from the Vaught.
