It’s an exciting day to be a new teacher in the Harrison County School District.
Today during orientation, teachers new to the district were surprised with a $250 gift card, thanks to a generous donation from the late Darrell Saucier.
Saucier passed away in April and chose the Harrison County School District to be the beneficiary of his life savings, a total of more than $642,000.
Hope Thomas, who will teach math, says she couldn’t be more thrilled to have this kind of support starting the school year. “I’m very surprised. Had no idea he was doing that. It’s such a big deal and it will help so much with just different things, school supplies in general or whatever we need. Hopefully I can buy something that will give them some hands-on experience within the math realm.”
Saucier’s donation enabled the district to set up three grant programs including ten $1,000 student scholarships awarded to 10 seniors and graduating juniors majoring in education, 10 $1,000 classroom grants awarded to help teachers and teacher assistants, and the new teacher support grant.
The scholarships in the grant program will be awarded annually.
