Soon South Mississippi schools will be welcoming students back into the classroom, and this weekend you can save money making sure your kids have what they need for the new school year.
Retailers and stores across the state, including right here in South Mississippi, are stocking their shelves with school supplies and hanging the latest fall fashions on their racks for young people all in preparation for the Mississippi sales tax holiday.
State lawmakers passed the tax-free weekend law more than a decade ago — but this year, school supplies have been added to the items that will be tax free all day long this Friday and Saturday.
The following items have been added to the tax-free list: binders, art supplies, backpacks, calculators, pencils, pens, markers, glue, and even textbooks.
Laptops and computers are not included, though, since they exceed the $100 cap on tax exempt purchases.
You’ll save seven cents on the dollar for tax exempt purchases under $100, so on a $90 dollar purchase, you’ll save $6.30 — with the state’s seven percent sales tax deducted.
