Man in standoff with Jackson County deputies with nearly seven hours

Jackson County Sheriff’s deputies were in a standoff this morning with a man who barricaded himself inside his home.

Deputies responded to a call around 3 a.m. that a gun had been shot inside a home on Farm Road in Vancleave. When units arrived, they found Devin Wilkerson inside his home. Family members said he was the one who fired the gun.

Deputies and a SWAT team negotiated with Wilkerson for over six hours. Around 9:30 a.m., they released multiple rounds of gas into the home to try to get Wilkerson to come out.

He was later arrested. Chief Deputy John Ledbetter said, “Everyone out here did a good job. We had to affect an arrest and it was made in the most peaceful way we could. We fired gas into the home and he came out and he was peacefully arrested.”

Wilkerson is being charged with felony domestic aggravated assault and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

No one was injured during this standoff.
