One local hospital is celebrating the new addition of a medical facility to its network.

Driftwood Nursing Center is now Memorial Driftwood Nursing Center after Gulfport’s Memorial Hospital assumed management of the facility from Strategic Healthcare. Hospital leaders and local officials celebrated the facility’s new era with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Memorial Hospital Senior Care Senior Director Kyle Lewis said, “This is a great opportunity for Memorial Hospital, along with Driftwood, and also more importantly the residents of the community to help bridge that gap and continue that care we want to provide for residents in this area.”

Driftwood opened in the late 1960s and features 151 beds, along with around-the-clock nursing care and support for patients at the facility. The center will continue to provide short-term and long-term care for patients.

“Driftwood currently serves both the long-term and short-term populations, so specifically do we have services for our rehab residents, which includes physical, occupational, and speech therapy, and we also provide services for our long-term individuals to help them maintain that function and give them the quality of life that they deserve,” Lewis said.

Chairman of the hospital’s Board of Trustees David White believes the location of the nursing center across the street from the hospital is a big benefit. “Well us being right next door and being part of our system, what the doctors have went through over there, through the nursing facilities there, look how much easier that transition is going to be and the planning that can happen, instead of the parents or the family members having to worry, ‘Well, where am I going to take them at?’ Well, you know, we’ve got Driftwood right across the street.”

Now, Memorial’s goal is to build on the care that Driftwood already provides. “Our first goal is to get in and build upon the quality that Driftwood has known and then look at trying to improve some of those quality measures,” said Lewis.

As Memorial Hospital celebrates its 73rd birthday, there is a sense of enthusiasm about the future of Driftwood and the hospital. “Very excited about it. This and other areas and other things we’re involved in and the growth that Memorial is doing right now, we are really… We’ve got a lot of great things happening to Harrison County and the surrounding counties.”
