Today the Rapiscan Systems Classic and the Gulf Coast Community Foundation awarded more than $440,000 to local charities.
It was the ‘Birdies for Charity’ check celebration and 20 charities were represented and 13 of them received money during today’s celebration. The tournament was in March, but today the different organizations got to see the fruits of their labor. Also, during today’s event there was a drawing for an additional $500 donation awarded to the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum.
‘Birdies for Charity’ Golf Tournament Director Stephen Schoettmer says it’s just an awesome feeling giving back to the community in this way. “It’s the coolest part of our job. Yes, we get to interact with some of these professionals, these Hall of Famers, these guys who are frankly larger than the game, but at the end of the day this is why the PGA Tour is an organization and why we’re here is to give back to the communities we’re in.”
Some of the largest donations went to local organizations like the United Way and the Humane Society of South Mississippi. Plans are already underway for next year’s ‘Birdies for Charity’ event.
