Salinity Levels Back on the Decline – Latest From Payton

0

FORECAST – Back to summertime weather in South Mississippi. Showers and t-storms should start to weaken as we head toward midnight, but a few t-storms are still possible tonight. Another shot of t-storms for your Monday with heavy rain and gusty winds. It’ll be hot and humid with highs in the upper 80s. This will be the trend for the rest of the workweek. There will be a shot of t-storms each afternoon.

SALINITY UPDATE – Last week we saw a spike in salinity even though the Bonnet Carré Spillway is still flowing. This was likely due to north winds. Last week we saw a north wind for multiple days, which temporarily allowed the salinity to jump back to normal. Saltwater is more dense than fresh water, which means the freshwater is on top of the saltwater. With the north wind it helped drive the freshwater out further into the Sound and allowed the saltwater to temporarily take over. Now that our southerly wind has returned the Salinity is dropping once again.
