While it’s fun to celebrate the success of the first half champion Biloxi Shuckers and their nine corresponding All-Stars, the Southern League mid-season classic brings an added dimension of star power to MGM Park.
The 2017 All-Star Weekend featured the former top prospect of the Chicago White Sox Eloy Jimenez smashing the outfield lights during the Home Run derby.
No surprise, Jimenez already has nine home runs as a major league rookie this season, putting him on pace for more than 30 with a full body of work.
Which brings us to this year’s All-Star Game on the Gulf Coast featuring yet another top prospect of the White Sox Luis Robert as well as the number one guy for the Cincinnati Reds Taylor Trammell and the top dog for the Atlanta Braves Christian Pache. Biloxi Shuckers Media Relations and Broadcasting Assistant Andrew Chapman said, “Yeah, you really hope that some of these top prospects in their respective systems have good years and can earn themselves an all-star vote and ultimately become all-stars because not only is this some of the best talent in the Southern League, but it also turns into a miniature version of a Major League showcase. These are guys who you could see making their Major League debuts as soon as late this year when teams make playoff pushes and they need to call up their minor leaguers or as soon as the 2020 season. So no doubt when you look back on this game a year from now, two years from now, you’re going to see some names on the North and South roster who are contributing in a big way at the Major League level.”
The All-Star festivities will lead off with Monday’s home run derby followed by Tuesday’s All-Star showcase.
Jackson Generals defeat the Shuckers 4-3 tonight.
