Flags in Mississippi are flying at half-staff to honor former U.S. Senator Thad Cochran.
The first of two funeral services for Senator Cochran began this morning at the Mississippi Capitol in Jackson.
Governor Phil Bryant and Lt. Governor Tate Reeves and others spoke highly of the late senator. He represented Mississippi in Congress for more than 45 years, making him the tenth longest serving U.S. senator in history.
Cochran was a Navy veteran and served as chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee and on the Senate Agriculture Committee. He retired from the Senate in April of 2018 due to health concerns.
The second funeral is on Tuesday at a church in Jackson.
