The ‘Murph Challenge’

Most people spent today throwing back a few beers and grilling burgers, but for some people the highlight of Memorial Day came with the accomplishment of completing an intense workout.

This morning, over 100 people came together at Crooked Letter CrossFit in D’Iberville to push themselves to the limit to complete the ‘Murph Challenge.’

This workout was created to honor a fallen American hero, Lt. Michael P. Murphy, a United States Navy Seal who was killed in action on June 28th, 2005.

The challenge starts with a one mile run, followed by 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 air squats, and wraps up with another one mile run. Some people even opted to do each exercise with a weighted vest. Chad Rhadick with Crooked Letter CrossFit said, “It’s a gut check for sure, but it kind of takes you back and makes you realize that you can suffer for an hour and it makes up for all those people that paid the ultimate sacrifice.”

Challenge participant Dhiana Skrmetti said, “It is really tough, but it is nothing compared to what the soldiers have sacrificed and we love to do this because this is in memory of some, but in honor of all and so if this is one way that we can honor them.”

Lt. Murphy was awarded the U.S. Military’s highest decoration, the Medal of Honor, for his actions during the war in Afghanistan.
