For the third year in a row, the Conference USA Baseball Championship makes Biloxi its home. The eight-team tournament started this morning at 9 o’clock and will continue throughout the weekend.
From as far north as Huntington, West Virginia to as far south as Boca Rotan, Florida, fans are flocking to the Coast for this week’s Conference USA Championship Tournament. “It’s definitely a cool place to travel to, a good place to have conference.”
For most fans, this is their first time on the Gulf Coast. Marshall fans Tammy and Rich Eason made the trip from West Virginia, leaving them with some questions such as ‘what do I need to try?’ “We might try out a casino.” “Yeah, we’ll do the casino, definitely some seafood.” “Definitely seafood.”
In its third year at MGM Park, the tournament has had its ups and downs. Following a conference record in attendance its first year, the tournament was dampened by poor weather last year. However, officials and fans aren’t worried in the slightest and are expecting a great week. Southern Miss fan Renee Hutto said, “I find the park to be very inviting. The vendors are very kind and nice and polite. The people in general are just really great people down here.”
Following their tournament victory last year, Southern Miss is back to try and defend their title and the close proximity of Hattiesburg to the Coast helps boost attendance. “It’s close for us and we expect to be in the tournament, but we like to come down here.”
Marshall fans left happy after beating Louisiana Tech in the first game of the tournament. Games continue through the weekend with the championship being Sunday afternoon.
If you’re looking to go to the games, be prepared to battle the heat and sun.
