A Gulfport man was swept away while trying to help some kids swimming in the Biloxi River.
According to Gulfport Fire Chief Mike Beyerstedt, emergency workers were called out to a section of the Biloxi River near River Road just after 6 p.m. last night where some kids had been swimming and were swept up in the current.
That’s when a 37-year-old man sprang into action, jumping into the water after the children to help. That man was swept away by the undertow and he drowned.
Harrison County Deputy Coroner Brian Switzer says the man who drowned has been identified as Anthony Lewellyn of Gulfport.
Gulfport Dive Team recovered Lewellyn’s body just after 7 p.m. last night. His death has been ruled an accidental drowning.
