Surprise! St. Martin High School senior and aspiring journalist Garrett Slade got a huge scholarship tonight!
Slade received a $2,000 scholarship to enter a journalism program at any four year school. Slade was one of the two finalists in the WXXV Broadcast Student of the Year contest and landed second place.
His work was so good that Bannister Foundation President Dan Burton presented the scholarship at Slade’s senior awards banquet.
Slade says he is thankful for the support of his teachers that helped him get this far. “I was very surprised. My teacher came to me and said ‘WXXV is doing a scholarship and you should apply.’ My teacher, my broadcast journalism teacher Crystal Harkleroad, she always pushes us to do the best we can do. If she knows we can do better she’ll make us go and re-film. I’m just so thankful for her for doing that because without her I wouldn’t be where I am now.”
This is the first Broadcast Student of the Year scholarship. The Bannister Foundation partnered with WXXV to make this possible and organizers plan to make it an annual scholarship.
