Every 92 seconds a woman is assaulted in the United States. One local organization is working hard to put an end to that.
April is ‘Sexual Assault Awareness Month’ and the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence is hosting numerous events.
On Friday, April 12th at 9 a.m., the eighth annual “Walk a Mile in her Shoes” event will take place at the Biloxi Lighthouse Pier.
The group will also be hosting “Jeans 4 Justice” on April 24th. This event asks employers to allow their employees to wear jeans to work for a $5 donation to support the Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence. Gulf Coast Center for Nonviolence CEO Stacey Riley said, “Sexual assault is probably the worst thing a person can go through in their lifetime. It is unimaginable the impact that sexual assault has on a person. To be sexually assaulted and then to come forth and talk to someone about it and not be believed or to be questioned about what that person could have done to have caused that is further traumatizing to that individual.”
