Providing sporting opportunities for individuals with disabilities is not a new concept, but localizing the opportunities in our area is what Gulf Coast Buddy Sports is about.
Tonight at the Gulfport Sportsplex they held their opening ceremonies and first games for the 2019 season and it was really an exciting night for the players.
Buddy Ball gets its name from each participant having a volunteer or buddy with them during each game. At the opening ceremony, each kid’s name was called and cheered on by the crowd.
The parents of these players say they are so thankful for Buddy Ball because it really gives these kids an opportunity that they normally would not have. Ann Wright is the mother of a Buddy Ball player. She said, “For me and families like mine to be able to participate in a wonderful spring rite of passage as baseball. It’s just and then to build these relationships with the volunteers. I’m just so excited and gratified and encouraged that this community, the Gulf Coast community has come together to put something like this together.”
This year there are 110 players which is the most they have ever had in the 10 years Buddy Ball Sports have been on the Coast.
