For those of you who enjoy traveling the friendly skies, you will have a few more options this summer. Sun Country Air announced two new direct flights that will be offered soon at the Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport.
The Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport has seen some major growth over the past few years and things are continuing to look up in the wake of an announcement Monday morning. Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport Executive Director Clay Williams said, “We are very excited to be able to announce the addition of two cities to Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport. We are going to have flights beginning in July from both Austin, Texas and Ft. Meyers, Florida.”
Welcome news for many who live here on the Gulf Coast. Just ask Coast native Joe Gill. He said, “Oh, it’s great. It’s great for the economy of the Coast. We like to see more flights come in. That means more tourists come in and that means more areas to go to ourselves.”
Gill says he has seen the Coast grow significantly throughout the course of his life and is excited that the local airport is becoming a one-stop-shop for flights to and from the Coast. “It’s quite an accomplishment here what they have done. It’s real nice. It’s good to have an airport like this because you used to have to go to Mobile to pick up our son and his family. Now we have a good airport we can come here.”
It’s not just locals who are noticing the expansion of the airport; the proof is in the numbers. “We had a good year in 2018. The passenger traffic was up 11 percent last year. We greatly appreciate the utilization of the airport and our airlines by our local residents. One of the things that I would mention is often times airlines like potential but they really follow volume so the more volume we have and the more utilization we have the more people will stay home and use their local airport. It allows us to increase options and opportunities like the ones we have today with Austin and Ft. Meyers.”
