Around this time of year in South Mississippi, it’s hard to go more than a week without high school basketball finding its way onto the big stage. On Saturday, it’s Pascagoula’s turn.
The annual Panther Classic is always full of marquee matchups with those home team Panthers hosting Laurel in the nightcap. Other local schools getting some run are West Harrison, Gulfport, Gautier, D’Iberville, Pass Christian, and Moss Point.
Pascagoula Head Coach Lorenzo Wright also has his eye on next weekend’s Hoopsfest, but he says first things first. “Yeah, I feel like we serve as an appetizer to Hoopsfest. So I think we have a good lineup and then the following weekend you’ve got Hoopsfest who always has a good lineup as well. So good basketball, seven games for five bucks. You can’t beat the price. We provide good matchups for our teams that you’ll see possible playoff matchups in the future, so that’s why it’s a good classic.”
The Panther Classic has been up and running for close to two decades.
