The Gulfport Main Street Association was awarded a $68,000 planning grant from the Knight Foundation to prepare for the Backlot at Trackside development.
The Backlot at Trackside Innovation District is a micro-retail community utilizing refurbished cargo containers and newly constructed micro-retail clusters. The plan will include up to 14 retail units featuring shopping, dining, and entertainment.
Gulfport Mayor Billy Hewes tells News 25 he’s excited about the new opportunity for the city. “We’re always looking for opportunities to provide more activities for our folks, whether its restaurants and bars to outdoor amenities. The way that downtown is getting its own identity, this is just a natural extension of the offerings that we should have for folks to come out and have a good time.”
This project, along with the Mississippi Aquarium and other things, will contribute to revitalize downtown Gulfport.
