It’s back to the grind for the 12 local high school football players selected for the 70th annual Bernard Blackwell All-Star Game.
Today was the second day of practice ahead of Saturday’s north-south classic, with the south team holding up at Harrison Central High School.
For the sake of the team, these Gulf Coast standouts are putting past rivalries aside and couldn’t be more humbled about this week’s experience as one of the chosen few. Biloxi defensive back Jordan Montgomery said, “Oh yeah, this is a weird jump cause once I get into basketball mode usually I don’t get back playing football until after track and stuff like that. So it’s fun being able to get back into it.”
St. Martin OL Brandon Cunningham said, “As a kid growing up seeing all-stars I was like wow, that’s a big deal. And now that I’m here I’m like yeah, this is pretty cool.”
Gulfport QB T.Q. Newsome said, “It’s very rewarding. So many hours go into our crafts, hours in the weight room, on the field doing this and that. So to be recognized for all of the hard work we’re putting in, it’s very special and it’s very rewarding.”
Saturday’s all-star game kicks off at 11:30 a.m. from Gulfport’s Milner Stadium.
