Southern Miss still alive in the west

As a byproduct of 18 straight winning seasons in USM’s recent history, getting to bowl games is something Southern Miss does pretty routinely. That post-season journey gets a little more difficult this week against UAB.

The Golden Eagles have some positive momentum from Saturday’s 26-24 win over Marshall, thanks in large part to winning the turnover battle 4-2. The first place Blazers present an even bigger challenge on the road with an overall record of 8-1 and a league mark of 6-0.

Despite the tall task looming in Birmingham, Head Coach Jay Hopson says all of his team’s goals are still in front of them. “We had a few breaks go our way Saturday, but in those games that we didn’t win we had some breaks go against us. So we’re a team that’s just got to keep battling, keep executing and that’s what I really focus on. I really do. And I know we’re playing a good football team but again, we’re still mathematically in this thing so we’re coming to put our best effort forward.”

The Golden Eagles and Blazers will kick things off at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday.

According to the Sun Herald, USM’s road to a fourth consecutive bowl game could get a little easier. The report claims Athletic Director Jon Gilbert is actively searching for a 12th opponent in lieu of having the September 15th game against Appalachian State cancelled due to Hurricane Florence.

Gilbert is reportedly in talks with at least one non-power five school for the team’s open date on December 1st.

USM is also working around the MHSAA High School football state championships being played at the Rock in Hattiesburg that weekend.
