Kids along the Gulf Coast are learning to become young potters in the making at the Ohr-O’Keefe Museum of Art in Biloxi.
This three week course allows children to explore their artistic side by learning about the pottery process. They learn the techniques like adding lids or handles and shaping. The kids learn just how much they can do creatively with their hands. It’s a chance for children to try something new over the summer.
Although most students start off slow, they start mastering the craft before the three week session is complete. Pottery teacher Robin Santana said, “It’s just like my first day of touching clay. They come out with this wobbly piece of stuff that comes out kind of crooked then they figure out how to take the water off and when to put it back and where to push and where to pull. They start creating shapes that they really enjoy. I love watching their eyes. I love watching them just light up when they make something that they’re really starting to love.”
It doesn’t take long to master pottery as Santana tells News 25 she started perfecting her craft two years ago.
