The pet partners group Visiting Pet Teams of South Mississippi held their 12th annual Pet Therapy Graduation and awards day.
The Visiting Pet Teams of South Mississippi hold this event to recognize the hard work the dogs and owners put in during visits and to recognize newly graduated therapy dogs that will now be part of the team. Some even received their doggy doctorates.
These therapy dogs visit hospitals, nursing homes, and many other places to provide emotional therapy for people. There is a lot of preparation these dogs and owners go through for these visits, but in the end it’s all worth it. Visiting Pet Teams incoming coordinator Michael Bowin said, “First the person doesn’t want to be there and second they’re probably not really feeling too good and you walk into that room and at first they’re struck ‘hey, there’s a dog in my room’ and then that smile breaks out. I don’t know how many people have told me ‘hey this has really made my day.’”
If your dog is calm, gets along well with people and other dogs, they may be a good candidate for a therapy dog.
