Revving up for Scrapin’ the Coast

Start your engines, South Mississippi. It is gonna be a wild ride this weekend at the 16th annual Scrapin’ the Coast event at the Coast Coliseum.

Coast Coliseum crews and Biloxi police are paving the way for the low riders and other unique custom vehicles that will begin rolling into South Mississippi Thursday as part of Scrapin’ the Coast. Petit Boys Liquor Owner Shawn Guider said, “Well, because we’re on a main strip to the beach we do really well. A lot of the locals come out and we’ll see them on the weekend to buy liquor to watch the events, events close to the Coliseum. We love the cruisers, the scrapers, anything that boosts tourism.”

Speaking of boosts, Coast Coliseum Executive Director Matt McDonnell said, “We’re getting higher profile vehicles than we’ve ever gotten before; vehicles that have been in movies, vehicles that are being introduced for the first time, not as many of the low riders as we once got.”

Even if you’re not the one behind the wheel this weekend, those who set the stage for this annual event say it is the spectators who drive up the numbers and the success of this event each year. “Our local crowds are very, very supportive of this event and they look forward to it each and every year. Our restaurants do really well in and around the Coliseum, the hotels in and around the Coliseum do extremely well; a lot of them are full for the weekend because of the Scrapers and their families that travel,” said McDonnell.
