Every time the odds are stacked against the Mississippi State baseball team, the rally banana always seems to prevail. Today, the Bulldogs were taking on the only team left in the NCAA Tournament Field that hadn’t lost a single game the entire post-season.
MSU taking on number 6 national seed North Carolina in a winner’s bracket game, rally bananas out in full force.
Mississippi State is winner’s bracket living once again, taking down the Tar Heels by the final count of 12-2. Westburg is the hero and the rally banana is only crazy if it doesn’t work. “I’m going to be honest, I don’t think I did see that kind of game. You always think about that kind of thing happening and you try to envision yourself in that moment, but no I just wanted to contribute any way I could and help my team win and just to do this was over the top.”
Mississippi State pitcher Konnor Pilkington said, “(Did you see Westy having that big of a day, man?) No. But I mean you never know what to expect from this team, you know? Mississippi State baseball, just another breed of baseball for us.”
Mississippi State right fielder Elijah MacNamee said, “We had a different vibe from him. His swings looked completely different. I told Coach Gautreau that Westy was going to have a big day, his swings were looking good.”
Mississippi State shortstop Luke Alexander said, “I mean he’s one of the hardest workers I’ve ever been around, it’s been there all year and it just happened to come out in the College World Series.”
Mississippi State interim head baseball Coach Gary Henderson said, “I’m not sure that you’re ever predicting seven RBI’s, a grand slam and a bases clearing double. I was really glad that he had that day, though.”
Mississippi State will play the winner of North Carolina and Oregon State with first pitch at 2 p.m. on Friday from TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha on ESPN. Well at least we think as NCAA baseball officials have postponed tonight’s game between Arkansas and Texas Tech. That’ll get going at 11 a.m. tomorrow on ESPN2.
Florida and Texas did get their elimination game in as the Gators improve to 6-0 when facing the prospect of going home over the past two seasons with a 6-1 triumph over the Longhorns.
