Just three days after being named a finalist for the 2018 C-Spire Boo Ferriss Trophy, Southern Miss right handed pitcher Nick Sandlin is up for another prestigious award.
Today, the junior hurler was named a semi-finalist for the Dick Howser Trophy, given to the top player in all of college baseball. Of the 35 players nominated, Sandlin is the only one from Conference USA and is one of six starting pitchers on the docket.
USM’s Friday night guy has certainly looked the part of an All American all season in 2018, flaunting a 1.15 ERA and 114 strikeouts in just 78 and a third innings.
The honor is voted on by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association across two rounds of voting.
Joining Sandlin on the list of 35 is Ole Miss designated hitter Chase Cockrell who leads the Rebels in slugging with a mark of .607. Then his teammate, Nick Fortes, has been rock solid as a backstop and he’s on the Johnny Bench semi-finalist award watch list for the nation’s best catcher.
