Known for his amazing detail and precise sense of composition, Laurent Smith is a local landscape painter who put his work on display today at the Mary C. O’Keefe Cultural Center.
Smith was born in upstate New York in 1908 and was gifted with a natural ability to sketch. He worked for the Tennessee Valley Authority and U.S. Corps of Engineers and Shell Oil Company before relocating to Bay St. Louis where he really focused on his painting. Failing eyesight forced him to give up painting in 1995.
In January 2003, Smith passed away leaving his beautiful paintings for everyone to see, embracing southern rural America with respect and historical accuracy.
