Today at Gulfport High School, students got a lesson in cybersecurity and computer technology at the first ever Duck-Con.

The 333rd Mad Ducks from Keesler Air Force Base dropped by to speak to students about concepts like coding, password selection, and wireless technology security.

Technical Sergeant Brock Metscher says the lessons shared with students are critical in an age where technology is everywhere you look. “We’re at Keesler. We teach this stuff, this is our forte. You have industry experts here to do this for the community, we’re giving back. We’re getting people ready before they get out into the career field. Maybe thinking a little more security minded so that they don’t make some silly mistake like clicking the wrong link, downloading the wrong file, choosing an insecure password. That’s essentially what we’re doing. We’re getting the knowledge out there for the kids young so they’ll grow up with it.”

Duck-Con featured five specialized seminars at Gulfport High School. There are plans to expand the program to other area schools in the future.
