Before tonight’s game, Biloxi Shuckers Ambassador Barry Lyons and Biloxi Mayor Andrew ‘FoFo’ Gilich were playing a little catch in front of the first base dugout.
As a former catcher of the New York Mets, Lyons is someone that’s tried Opening Day a lot of different ways: as a fan, as a player, and as an ambassador.
A baseball purist through and through, Lyons says opening day never gets old and loves having a dog in the fight down here on the Gulf Coast. “Well I definitely have vested interest in this ball club and minor league baseball here on the Coast, and to be a part of the organization in an official capacity and be a part of Opening Day ceremonies and Opening Day festivities it does my heart good. It just brings a smile to my face, and I just give God the glory and I’m just so thankful for it. But Opening Day whether it be in youth baseball or high school baseball, Minor League Baseball and then Major League Baseball, it’s all the same. It’s a new beginning.”
Lyons is a graduate of Biloxi High School and was a part of New York’s 1986 World Series team.
