Gulfport police announce spring break event for families

For the first time ever, Gulfport police will be hosting an alternative event for families during the big spring break event on the Coast next weekend.

The announcement was made during a press conference at the police department this afternoon. Called “Rod, Reel and Roux,” the free family fun will be taking place in Jones Park starting with a kid’s fishing rodeo, pet adoptions, a chalk festival, a gumbo cook-off, a step show and live music.

The Gulfport police teamed up with the city and various local organizations to host a fun-filled day. Gulfport PD Public Information Officer Sgt. Clayton Fulks said, “We have had several groups that came together and wanted to do something. It’s going to be a free family event. Wild life and fisheries will be there to introduce some kids into fishing that maybe haven’t done that before. It is spring break weekend so we wanted to offer families something do.”

“Rod, Reel and Roux” will go from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 14th. If you’re interested in entering the gumbo cook-off call 228-868-5801.
