Today Gulfport firefighters responded to a call of a fully engulfed structure fire at about 3:40 p.m.
Over 25 firefighters and eight units responded to the house fire on Dixie Avenue. At the time of their arrival the home was already fully engulfed in flames. Three men lived on the property, but no injuries were suffered.
According to Gulfport Fire Department, the fire originated in the bedroom and is believed to have been caused by improperly disposed smoking materials.
News 25 spoke to Gulfport Fire Battalion Chief Greg Griffin. He tells us more about the tactic the department used to control the flames. “We did have exposure problems to the north of the burning buildings and the south of the burning building. The firefighters were able to concentrate their efforts on defensive tactics and putting out the houses that were in danger to prevent them from catching on fire.”
Heir of home Judge Melvin Ray said, “It is upsetting. This is my childhood home where I grew up. I’m from the Gaston Point community and this is upsetting. It’s the second time I’ve gone through this. This house burned in 1983 when I was a seventh grader and to see it end this way is upsetting.”
Judge Ray says he does not plan on rebuilding the home.
