Southern Miss is going to the Independence Bowl

From 1982 to 1991, Southern Miss and Florida State were fellow members of the old Metro Conference. Five years later was the last time the two schools played in football, but that’s all about to change.
Yesterday, USM accepted a bid to play in the Independence Bowl against the Jimbo Fisher-less Seminoles from the ACC. That means the Golden Eagles will cap off the season with a Power 5 matchup for the second time in three years. This is their third trip to Shreveport altogether.
The last time the Black and Gold took down FSU was 1989 when Brett Favre threw a game winning touchdown pass in the waning moments.
The Independence Bowl is the 11th oldest bowl game, dating back 42 years and will kick off at 12:30 p.m. on December 27th on ESPN.
Florida State leads the all-time series 13-8-1.
