Today marks a special day for U.S. Navy sailors around the world including at the Seabee Base.
The 242nd birthday of the U.S. Navy was celebrated in Gulfport with a special decorated cake followed by a ceremony. It was on this day in the year 1775 that the Continental Congress established the Continental Navy which later became what we know now as the U.S. Navy.
Commander Ronald Jenkins tells News 25 why this event is important. “Well today is the Navy’s birthday to honor the brave men and women who have served before and served in the present, combat missions, training recovery, 24 hours a day and 365 days a year.”
The Navy has over 322,000 personnel on active duty and over 107,500 in the Navy Reserve.
