A struggling New Orleans Saints defense is the reason why New Orleans lost last night 45-32 and fell to 0-3 this season.
News 25’s Hank Davis was at the Superdome for the division matchup against the Atlanta Falcons and brings us the details.
For the second year in a row, the New Orleans Saints are starting off their season with three consecutive losses, but their most recent defeat carries some extra sting as the game was scheduled as a celebration.
This particular matchup with the Atlanta Falcons was planned on the anniversary of one of the greatest moments in Saints football history: the return of football to New Orleans post Hurricane Katrina. In a storybook moment, Steve Gleason blocked a punt which was recovered by the Saints for a touchdown, setting the tone for a new era in the Superdome.
Saints fans came to celebrate the ten years of football that has taken place since the team came back to the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina, but it was the Falcons offense that ended the party a little early.
All night the Atlanta Falcons running backs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman found ways to pick up yards against a Saints defense which has struggled to find itself so far this season. Coach Sean Payton said, “I think many of the things we had to do or felt like we needed to do to give ourselves a chance to win, we weren’t able to do that.”
Saints defensive back Ken Crawley said, “Just hurting us in the run game, getting us out on the edges, they had two great backs. We just didn’t set the edges and they ran the ball well.”
The Saints offense struggled in the game at times as well, managing 32 points in the contest, but falling short of a late game comeback when Drew Brees was intercepted by Deion Jones. Jones took the ball 90 yards to the house. “We’re down in their red zone and we get the tipped interception that goes back to the house. You know that’s a 14 point swing,” said Brees.
New Orleans will look for their first win of the season this Sunday when they travel to San Diego to take on the Chargers.
