One of the former Ole Miss students accused of placing a noose around the statue of James Meredith learned his fate today.
Austin Reed Edenfield was sentenced to one year probation, along with 50 hours of community service. He was ordered for substance abuse and mental health treatment.
On March 24th, Edenfield pled guilty to the misdemeanor charge. The charge said Edenfield helped others use threatening force to intimidate African American students and university employees.
Overseeing Judge Mike Mills told Edenfield his action came from “somewhere dark.”
In February 2014, Edenfield and others placed the noose and former Georgia State flag on the statue. Meredith was the first African American student to attend the university.
