Jackson Water Problems

The Mississippi State Department of Health says pregnant women and young children should not consume Jackson water straight from the tap because of concerns about lead levels.

The department issued precautions Wednesday, weeks after releasing results of testing that showed elevated lead levels in water in some Jackson homes.

The department’s director of health protection, Jim Craig, says the precautions should be followed for six months, until the city can stabilize the alkalinity and pH levels in the water system.

People are being told to run cold tap water for one or two minutes before using it for drinking or cooking and to never use hot water for drinking or cooking.

Filtered or bottled water should be used by pregnant women and children 5 or younger, and for baby formula.
