Fourth graders of the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Gulf Coast and Jackson County now have an opportunity to have a fun filled “estuary adventure to remember” this summer, thanks to a grant from the National Park Foundation.
The Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve in Jackson County is one of 186 federal sites selected to receive the field trip grant. The $650 grant provides funding for the fourth graders to visit the N.E.R.R. and participate in a variety of fun activities such as hiking, fishing, birding, wetlands discovery and more.
Education Coordinator for Grand Bay N.E.R.R. Jennifer Buchanan said, “We found that over the last 20 years, you know, kids are not getting outside nearly as much because remember when you and I were kids, we’d go outside and play until the street lights came on, but they haven’t been going out. So, we’re trying to give these inner city kids an experience outdoors where they can have fun all while learning about our natural resources.”
National Park Foundation grants have made it possible for more than 400,000 students to visit national parks and other public lands and waters.
