Tomorrow night at 9 o’clock, Southern Miss kicks off the season against Mississippi State. It’s been over 20 years since the Bulldogs played at USM.
Today, News 25’s Kendra Turley caught up with fans and staff around campus as they prepare for tomorrow’s highly anticipated match up in Hattiesburg.
M.M. Roberts Stadium is quiet at the moment but tomorrow night, seats will be filled with roaring USM fans ready to gain redemption against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. State beat the Golden Eagles 49-0 last season. Jack Duggan, assistant athletic director with USM Communications said, “That was last year. We start over again in 2015. We hope to play as well as we can tomorrow.”
Today, USM fans all across campus were preparing for the arrival of the Bulldogs. Last year, the USM Golden Eagles played in Starkville for the first time since 1990. This year, the Bulldogs will be playing at “The Rock” for the first time since 1989.
USM alumni Matt Niemeyer said, “That’s always a great event when you can have in-state rivals on the home and home as we did last year. It’s a great boost economically for our towns and for the communities.”
Student tickets for the game sold out in hours. Nearly 2,000 students wrapped around the ticket office to secure their seat for Saturday night. While many are ready to see the game, most are just happy to have the football atmosphere back on campus. USM senior Demond Walker said, “You’ve got people everywhere. You have tents set up everywhere. You have a little music going on over here. Of course, you have food and things like that. So, it’s a good experience.”
Assistant Athletic Director Jack Duggan tells News 25 the football players are ready to make the USM community proud. “This is the first step of where they get a barometer to see where they are in the season. See how well their spring practice and their fall camp have gone so far.”
